New Threats to Freedom by Rebecca Bryan

This past semester, I took Biblical Perspective on Current Events at Delmarva Christian High School. This class taught me to use a critical eye when evaluating controversial issues within the news. It also taught me to find Biblical support for my opinions. If I was questioning a certain topic, I learned to use the Bible to find truth. The subjects we discussed ranged from physician assisted suicide to the Bible in politics, to responding to Wikileaks and the releases of classified materials. This class has led me to research topics that continue to invade the news and to form my own opinion based on the Bible, rather than just how I feel.

Recently, Greg Lukianoff, President of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), posted a video concerning censorship on college campuses, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEyZE42nDZU. He argues that the more colleges censor speech, the more our rights will be taken from us. The most interesting statement in his video was, “One of the great harms of speech codes on campus censorship is that it leaves students with the false impression that censorship is what good compassionate people do.”

Many people do not want to offend others or cause strife over issues that aren’t “important”. Instead, people avoid or breeze over topics that are controversial, never truly taking a stand against injustices. 1 Corinthians 10:23-24 says “All things are lawful,” but not all things are helpful…. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor.” These verses explain that moderation is better than forcing beliefs or avoiding debates. In context, everything that happened was lawful, but it also hurt other people. I understand this text to say we need to think before we speak, and to think about how we speak; when and what would be profitable to say. When people stand in the street screaming “You are going to Hell!” they don’t usually have many converts. But if someone talks to people and brings up God explaining His love, in a nonabrasive way, the message will go further and possibly bring that person to church. The manner in which things are done is what is important.

In the case of college censorship, I believe that it is against our First Amendment rights. We are granted freedom of speech in the Bill of Rights. By censoring speech on college campuses, young adults are held back from learning how to truly argue a point by expressing their beliefs and will eventually learn to be silent. Lukianoff said that freedom of speech trickles down into every right we hold. If that right is taken away, then the rest will cease to exist. Though it sounds frightening and like a science fiction novel, the prospect of losing the right to freedom of speech is coming quickly. If young adults entering college learn how to express their beliefs as well as understand the balance between forcefulness and apathy, speech codes on college campuses will lessen and speech will continue to be free.

Please help us support our troops!

Support our American Heroes serving overseas.

We would like to make this a year long campaign and support one group of men currently stationed in Iraq.

These approximately 120 men make up the Alpha Battery, 1-7 Field Artillery, 2nd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division.

Their commander is one of our own, Captain Erik Kemerling, son of Mr. & Mrs. Scott Kemerling.

These men shipped out the first week in November and will be in Iraq for one year. They have missed Thanksgiving with their families and will miss Christmas & Easter, not to mention countless birthdays, anniversaries, milestones, and memories with their families. They will miss these willingly and serve us by serving their country.

We would like to give back to these brave men by sending them monthly care packages overflowing with our love in the form of letters, cards, small gifts, and a few necessities. Lists of some things they could use are below, posted on the blog, and on posters throughout the school. Take a look and do what you can so that we can send a care package out before Christmas! Red, white, & blue boxes will be in the lobby of the main entrance to the school and any donations you bring in can be deposited there. Thank you for your willingness to bless others.

Thanksgiving

It is easy to go to God with our problems, the things we want, hope for, and the situations we would like to change. As a result in the craziness of life it is easy to forget to thank God each day for what he has given us. Thanksgiving is a special time of year, which allows us to really focus on the ways God blesses us. However, each day we should find something to thank God for. If you were to write down at least one way God has blessed you each day, by the end of the year you would be able to look back at 365 blessings. Doing this allows you to see God working in your life every day; it helps you take notice of things you may not have seen before. We would never forget to thank someone for a gift; therefore we should surely not forget to thank God who has given us everything.

Chapel 11/3/10

Faith is not a last name. It is not something you get because you go to a certain school, attend a particular church, know the right people, or can say the right things. Faith is not dependent on any of these things. Faith is something personal between us and God. He is the one who gives us faith. We have to want it though. As pastor Rob said it is our responsibility to get faith. We have to be willing to let go of our will and trust God. Faith is by no means easy to get. However at the darkest times in our lives if we even have a small amount of it, God can use it to move mountains and maybe even change a few lives.

Chapel 10/27/10

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in life, unexpected problems and situations that can be overwhelming. Life is far from comfortable. It is easy to dwell upon our own problems and struggles; it is much harder to look beyond ourselves to see other people. However, there is a desperate need for this. When we strive to care about other’s lives it brings us together. Life can be so different when you have people supporting you and challenging you, it becomes something much more meaningful. As our chapel speaker said though, unity does not just happen we have to make it happen.

Chapel 10/20/10

“I’ll do it tomorrow.” This a phrase I often use without thinking. It is so easy to put things off because of busyness or because I just don’t want to deal with it, the reasons can go on and on. However, as our Chapel speaker reminded us we are not guaranteed tomorrow. Tomorrow could never come, and then that list of things we put off would be nothing more than a list. Perhaps one of the things we should have done would have made a difference in someone’s life, a difference that will never be made because we put too much stock in tomorrow. We don’t know what the future holds, and we don’t know what might have been. What we can do is seek God because he will help us to live fully today and not in tomorrow.

Chapel 9/29/10

Have you ever seen a fake flower? They can be pretty and you don’t have to worry about them dying, but are they just as good as a real flower? Fake flowers aren’t alive and they don’t grow. They don’t become more beautiful day by day or create more flowers once they are gone. As a Christian are you alive or dead? Are you the same year by year or are you growing with Christ? This week in chapel the speaker told us that if we are alive we need to be growing. Spending time with God helps us to grow. We can call ourselves Christians, but if we don’t make the effort to seek God we are no different than fake flowers. When we run after God he can make our lives something beautiful.

Chapel 9/15/10

Check out the song below. I think that it really goes well with our chapel from Wednesday.

The first time I heard this song it made me want to cry, and lately it has really been on my heart. I feel like the words have such a powerful message. So many people are asking, what does love really mean? Every day we see dozens of people, countless faces who may be going through things we could only imagine. What if instead of just walking by, we noticed them. Each of has a story and gifts all our own, that regardless of whether we think them significant, can touch someone else’s life. Eric Miller said we just need to invest ourselves in others. Just a glimpse at love can change a life. If we just look around God will show us whose life we can make a difference in. If God calls us to the task he will surely equip us to finish.

Chapel 9/8/10

Have you ever heard the saying “out of sight, out of mind?” It basically means that when you don’t see something you no longer think about it. More often than not this can prove very true. How often have you put something away and then completely forgotten about it? If we are not careful we can do this God. If we don’t make a conscious effort to keep focused on God he will slip from our minds as we go about our day. If we only give a scheduled time to God we are only going to think about him them. We will totally miss all the ways he is working in our lives. When we tell God about the ordinary stuff it makes him seem more like a close friend and not someone far away. Not someone who is forgettable. In Chapel Stacy Mills talked to us about how God wants to hear about our lives. He’s always got an arm open and an ear ready. He is just waiting for us to speak up.

Maturing in Prayer

If you could say anything about maturing in prayer what would you say? This is the question I pondered as I tried to decide what to write. Then I felt like God was telling me to just listen, to forget about what I thought I should write and just listen. Taking time to listen is one of the greatest acts of surrender we can make in our prayers. You have to give the time over to God and trust he knows what you need and what you are looking for. It’s the same as with someone you really know. Can’t so much be said with just a look? You are trusting the other person to get what you mean and to respond. How many of us can say that our prayer life is personal enough that communication can come down to something comparative to a look. In chapel Pastor Vaughan said “that to be used by God we have to surrender.” For God to use our prayer life we have to surrender it to him.

POOL PARTY!

Hey guys! This is the first post of the 2010-2011 school year! This Saturday we are having a school-wide pool party, not world-wide like Michelle said in chapel! But seriously, here is all of the information that you need to get there and have a great time.

Saturday, August 28th
6:30 to 9:30
$5 per student/$10 per family
Pot Nets Lakeside (directions below)
MODESTY RULES
Girls - Modest one piece or tankini (no midriff showing)
Pizza & Drinks Included!

Your parents and siblings are invited to come and join in on the fun. We all bring our families and it is a great night! There is a really large shallow end so young kids will have a nice place to play.

Modesty:
Since we will be at a pool party, everyone will be in bathing suits. This is really important because we don’t want to tempt our brothers or sisters in Christ. Every girl must wear a modest one piece bathing suit, or a tankinee that does not show your stomach. Immodest bathing suits are not allowed. If your tankinee is questionable, don’t wear it. We want to have a good time, but we also do not want to be a stumbling block. Please think about your suit before coming. Boys please don't wear a speedo!

Important!
Those who have been to a school-wide pool party or one held in Pot Nets should not disregard these directions. There are (6) Pot Nets communities so don't assume you know where it is if you have been to a previous party.

Directions:
From the north & south.

Take Rt. 24 East turn right on to Long Neck Rd.
or
Take Rt. 24 West turn left on to Long Neck Rd.

Continue 1.4 miles, Turn right into Pot Nets Lakeside. Pool is .3 miles on the left.

I hope to see everyone at the pool party and I hope that the start of the school year is going great for everyone!

Untamed Worship

I'll be heading off to Patrick Henry college on the 18th of August. I'm so excited! Several weeks ago I visited the college and the President, Dr. Graham Walker, gave a brief speech for us prospective students. By now, I've forgotten most of it. However, one thing he said I will not soon forget. He was remarking on the fact that chapels are mandatory at Patrick Henry College . I am unable to quote him precisely, but this is the gist of it, "In an academic environment, such as the one fostered at PHC, it can be rather easy to begin to become somewhat haughty, somewhat prideful in light of your quality education. And that is precisely why it is absolutely essential that we continually come together in worship before our Creator; because it is difficult to be self-exalting when you are kneeling in awe of Someone so much greater than yourself, when you are worshiping God." I look forward to communing with a group of people who have this perspective on worship.

This past week, Pastor John, shared with us about excellence in worship. He discussed all kinds of ways in which worship manifests itself. More importantly, he admonished us to be sincere in worship. I think the key to this is maintaining that perspective Dr. Walker prescribes; one that understands who God is and is struck by that revelation in a way that cannot be contained in a tamed expression of worship.

I hope you all are challenged to practice this in the chapels to come.

Chapel 5/12/10

Mark 9:24 "And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief."

The father of the child in the above passage was desperate. He came to Jesus with an irrational hope. But he wasn't sure. He didn't know for certain if it would work. I'm sure that as he approached Jesus his mind was troubled with the thought of leaving with the same pain he brought with him. I'm sure he doubted.

This is one of my favorite passages of scripture. I often find myself praying "Lord, help my unbelief." Faith is difficult. Even when you've had positive spiritual experiences, trusting the Lord to do what He says He will do is not always easy. It is hard. I love what Sean McPherson said this week: "Doubt is the prerequisite to faith." The Scriptures tell us that everyone is given a measure of faith. It doesn't say that that faith will be big enough to encompass all of our doubts. It doesn't say that we'll boldly be commanding mountains to be moved without the least concern that it might not move. Perhaps our faith is stronger for the doubt we have to overcome to walk in that faith.

Go ahead and read the context of the story in Mark 9, and consider the role that doubt and faith play.

The Power of the Tongue

Lie: "Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me."
Truth: "Life and death are in the power of the tongue," Proverbs 18:21.

Mr. Johnson talked about several things at chapel this week, but the one thing that hung with me the most was what he said about words. He asked, "If words are what tears you down, what builds you back up? Words." The power of words is amazing. You can totally cripple a person with your words. You can make accusations, and hinder their ability to grow. Or, you can empower and edify with your words. It is not our job to go around alerting our brothers and sisters in Christ of their many imperfections. Scripture says that the devil is the accuser of the saints (Revelation 12:10). We don't need more than one accuser. We need edifiers. We need people in the body who say what God says about people. I might see that you have a problem with gossiping, and he has a problem with manipulating, and she has a problem with lying, but I'm not here to fix you. I'm here to speak truth into your life.

Of course there is a balance to that. Sometimes we do have to address those kinds of issues, because we are accountable to one another. Accusations are fueled by hurt, anger, insecurity and a horde of other selfish motivations. Godly correction must be fueled only by love in the context of relationship.

If you'd like to talk more about this, feel free to come up and talk to me in the halls or during lunch. See you around.

Prayer - Talking to God

What? Talking to God? Have you considered the implications of saying that you can just talk to God whenever you want to; that He listens when you speak? Who is God and why does He care what you have to say? This is perhaps the most profound concept of Christianity. Being able to talk to the Creator of the Universe says a ton about who we are. We've got to be pretty special. No other religion in the world places that kind of value on a human being. We are important to God. He is interested in all of the insignificant details of our lives. That's just crazy. Think on it.

This week, Pastor Jimmy had some great things to say about prayer. One thing in particular was his point that, while we are be able to talk to God from anywhere, at any time, that does not nullify or replace the value of getting alone with Him. We still need that time - that quiet time of prayer. Set time aside to hang out with God. Even Jesus set time aside to pray! If He needed that time, how can we live without it?

Announcements:

The Royal Ball is coming up on May 7th. Ladies, make sure you sign up to get your dresses checked in time to make any necessary changes. If changes are needed, you must get your dressed checked a second time. Tickets are $40

Saturated

At chapel this week, Mr. Jones delved into the issue of purity. Purity is obviously very important to God. Many times in the OT, as Mr. Jones pointed out, the Israelites were unsuccessful because they were impure. Webster's Third New International Dictionary defines pure as: unmixed with any other thing: containing no added substitute or foreign substance.

Purity is about being totally devoted to one thing without mixing in any other objects of devotion. When that one guy took some of the spoils from Jericho he was mixing in devotion to material things with his devotion to God, and it definitely did not work out. I thought it was interesting that when I looked up purity on an online dictionary, the second definition was "saturation." So not only are we devoted to only one thing, God, but we are utterly saturated with Him. We are not diluted with any other things. We are totally, entirely, exclusively, fully and utterly devoted to only Him. Now that's cool.

Remember, when you start getting overwhelmed with school or other things going on in life, the reason you are here is to honor Him. Don't give up when it gets hard. Work hard because you know you are equipping yourself to advance the Kingdom of God. That's why you are here, and it's totally worth facing all of the challenges in light of that purpose. Be totally devoted to Him and He fulfills your needs.

"But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Matthew 6:33

Whip him!

Wow! What a great message. Perhaps most memerable of the stories Mr. Harold Eberle shared with us was the story about the goat. A major element of that story was the relationship between the son who was being beaten by the goat and the father who equipped the son with the authority and the tools to overcome the goat. Just like Mr. Eberle said, don't let the things of this world beat you down. We are overcomers in Christ. We are no longer held captive by the things of this world, for we are emowered with sonship! That's a really cool thing.

One thing that Mr. Eberle shared when he was at our church on Sunday night was the concept of slavery to God vs. being sons of God. Muslims are slaves. The word Islam means "slave of God." We're not slaves of God. We are heirs with Christ. We are adopted and given an inheritance, and more than that, we are given authority. That means we get to make decisions. That means that we are in charge of the world. Mr. Eberle called the world "the family business." Unfortunately, many Christians live like Muslims. They relate to God as slaves rather than as sons. Don't get caught in that trap. You are a child of God and He has equipped you and authorized you to beat up that goat.

So have fun!

The ultimate effect of missions work is, in the long run, truly inestimable.

I'm sure that the team that went to Jamaica can attest to this. The work that they've done in Jamaica has touched lives and continues to touch lives. A new kitchen, an addition, or a house for one person can become a heavenly stronghold. Every day that that person wakes up in that building, he or she is reminded of the goodness of God. And God can use that further than we can imagine to advance His kingdom. That single testimony can create a rippling effect and touch millions of others.
I was especially encouraged to hear how the companionship our Jamaica team gave some of the young boys in prison the will to pursue Christ in that dark place. Just imagine the implications! Praise the Lord.

2/23/10

Hey Everyone,

So, this week for chapel Pastor Rob came and spoke about faith. He really emphasized the necessity of faith in order to have relationship with God. God doesn't just give us all the answers and tell us how things are gonna turn out. He doesn't drop down a to-do list from heaven that instructs us on all of what He expects from us (doesn't that sound great?). No, instead He asks us to come to Him in faith; to seek Him with the assurance that He will answer and provide in His own timing. He doesn't want servants, He wants sons!
